The display camouflages into the sleeve otherwise, so the technology and interaction is quiet, elegant, and delightful. &nbsp; Timepiece is a product of Modular Patternmaking, my Master’s thesis from New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP). Between fashion and technology, there resides a lack of communication and collaboration between two vastly different fields of expertise. Googling “wearable/smart clothing” returns a myriad of IoT compatible sportswear and LED-enhanced garments that have failed to gain traction in mainstream fashion. With limited understanding and access to what is possible outside of their respective industries, it’s proven difficult for fashion designers and engineers not to fall into the trap of designing gimmicky solutions for problems that don’t exist. My Thesis&nbsp; The challenge of manufacturing wearables and functional apparel is hard and soft goods integration. Currently, factories do not have the equipment or skilled labor to assemble garments and hardware all under one facility. Therefore, systems need to be modular. As a professional patternmaker, I believe a careful dissection of the anatomy of clothing is the answer. Modular patternmaking examines how individual parts of a whole can be manipulated, segmented, and/or combined to assemble clothing with integrated technology. I read articles on the fashion supply chain, hardware hacking and manufacturing, connected devices, and the taxonomy of innovations for wearable products and services. I analyzed the traction of smart watches and hearables, and identified the major players, trends, and projections for the global wearables market. In addition, I interviewed industry professionals in wearables consulting, product design, physical computing, and the fashion industry.To demonstrate and test the viability of modular patternmaking, I designed a case study where I conducted qualitative interviews with 35 people about their style and how they envision the future of wearables. A thorough analysis and aggregation of common themes and insights led to the ideation of Timepiece, a leather biker jacket that explores gesture as a wearables solution. Materials and a detailed techpack was sent to a factory in Midtown, New York City with two-weeks lead time for production to learn about communications and challenges that may arise in manufacturing. The goal was to learn from each other and document an integrated design process with limitations and parameters of the technology in mind from conceptualization to fabrication. LEL has a range of applications. Color is not a property an object has or possesses, but rather a perceived phenomena that results from the interaction between light, the properties of objects, and how our brain interprets that information. When holding up two polarizing filters at perpendicular angles (b), light is unable to pass through so all that is visible is black (absence of light). Two polarizing filters in parallel allows light to pass through (c). Only some light can pass through when placed at an angle (d). The upper right animation demonstrates this phenomena. The bottom animation demonstrates a combination of linear and circular polarizers that disperse the visible color spectrum. Light travels through birefringent (doubly refracting) materials such as cellophane at two different speeds. When polarized light enters the material, its direction of polarization will probably not line up with the length of the material. If the light is polarized in a direction that does not line up, its direction of polarization will be resolved into two perpendicular components. One of these components will be parallel to the length of the material, and one will be perpendicular. A prism motif disperses an array of colors over the shoulder, with ribbon cascading down the sleeves for movement and allusion to crossing the finish line. The customized LEL serves as the essential backdrop for illuminating the context of color perception, and exhibits color change when the runner is in motion. Specifications were passed to Loomia’s team of engineers to develop a functional prototype to integrate in the final garment. It explores real time biometrics transmitted wirelessly to a computer program that calibrates to the individual, allowing the wearer to visualize and appreciate the autonomy of breathing by interacting with a game interface. &nbsp; Alive is a semester final project at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP).&nbsp; &nbsp; Concept Ideation Simon first approached me about collaborating by showing me a doodle he made in his notebook of a shirt with electrodes and wires coming out of it. He shared with me his background as an athlete and researcher in human physiology, and how he would like to see physical procedures be performed on people in a less invasive manner.
